Art Tour

Art Tour Report 2018

For the past few years the Grade 11 Visual Arts and Design learners have been given the opportunity to tour to Cape Town at the end of the second term. This year the Visual Arts learners toured separately from the Design learners so that the itinerary can suit the specialised interest of learners taking Visual Arts as a subject with Art teacher, Mrs Grobler.  It was also a great opportunity for the learners from the senior Art classes to get to know each other and learn from each other, irrespective of age and grade.

The small group of 10 girls stayed in Stellenbosch for the first night and spent about a day and a half exploring the student town and surroundings. This included a visit to the Stellenbosch Visual Arts department, SMAC gallery, US gallery, Rupert Museum and a guided tour of the beautiful Sculpture Garden of renowned South African sculptor, Dylan Lewis. Over 60 sculptures constituting a comprehensive record of Lewis’s full artistic development thus far have been carefully placed in harmony with the landscape.

After the Stellenbosch leg of the tour, they were off to Cape Town where they were accommodated in the heart of the City Centre at The Backpack. From here they ventured (mostly by foot) into the city centre exploring the various galleries and shops. We couldn’t bypass the V&A waterfront and spent plenty of time shopping while also attending two guided tours in the new silo district – the Southern Guild Gallery and The Zeitz MOCAA. We were equally impressed by the contemporary African art and the inspiring architecture of the reimagined century old grain silo structure.

They left Cape Town after a jam-packed 5 days of activities full of new ideas and inspiration for our creative pursuits at Pearson and thereafter.
