Multisport Season Reports 2018

This past season proved to be a case of quality over quantity as far as Pearson was concerned. The biathlon group of athletes grew ever so slightly in terms of numbers, with ten athletes representing Pearson in the league events over the course of the season. Despite having only a few athletes, Pearson dominated the local competitions and was well represented in the Eastern Province team for the various interprovincials and the team to the national championships.

On a local level, athletes competed in four league competitions as well as the Eastern Province championships during which the team achieved a total of 21 podium positions which included 11 first places (including three Eastern Province champions), 6 second places and 4 third places. Pearson athletes represented Eastern Province in three interprovincials held in Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth and Oudtshoorn respectively. All ten athletes were selected to represent the province at the South African National championships in Pretoria, of which six athletes participated. The top performances were by Ruben Smith (9th u17 boys), Lisa Venter (4th u19 girls) and Anke Serfontein (1st u13 girls).

At the Eastern Province Modern Biathlon AGM and prizegiving the Pearson athletes were rewarded for their performances throughout the season and received the following awards:

Meghan Baxter: EP Colours for u13 girls

Damian Smith: EP Colours, & trophy the highest average league points for u17 boys.

Pearson also won the Trophy for the top Girls High School team. This is the 1st time Pearson has won this trophy since 2007!

All the athletes must be congratulated on an excellent season.

A small number of athletes represented Pearson in the local league races and attained some good results. Four athletes were selected for the Nelson Mandela Bay team to the Eastern Cape Biathle &Triathle Championships and from that event were selected for Eastern Cape team to the South African Biathle &Triathle Championships which were held at Pearson from the 22nd – 24th of June. They were Jessica Beukes, Arno van Heerden, Meghan Baxter and Anke Serfontein. The highlight for Pearson was Anke Serfontein winning gold in both the biathle and triathle events for girls u15 and being selected for the South African team for the World Biathle &Triathle Championships to be held in Egypt at the end of October. We look forward to growing these sports in the coming season.
