Chess Report 2018

One of the highlights of our chess this year was hosting our annual tournament. In 2016 we hosted our first tournament in the form of a small simultaneous tournament with 25 players taking on a grandmaster. In 2017 we had a more conventional tournament with 56 players participating in two sections. Both these events happened in our school hall.

This year we hosted the Pearson Boardwalk Open at the Boardwalk. Our main sponsor, The Boardwalk, made the convention centre available to us. We made this a fide-rated tournament and were therefore able to attract 8 grandmasters, the South African Champion and our own South African player, Jack van Zyl-Rudd, who eventually managed a more than respectable overall 3rd place. More than 250 players made up the two other sections A and B. Total prize money of more than R30 000 was won by the top 3 in each category.

Our two chess teams participated in the annual EP League in their respective groups. Our A team won the A-league for the third consecutive year! Well done to the team. The B team ended fourth in the B-league, which consisted of only A teams from other schools.

The following players will represent their province at nationals:

Himson To U20

Rafael Sapere

Simon Riordan

Pearson is indeed very proud to have the current SA number 5, Jack van Zyl-Rudd, representing the school. He participated in several international tournaments this year and he has a Fide-rating of 2 265. This places him ahead of the current SA champion.

We are proud of the following awards which were made at our annual Cultural Awards Assembly:
