Toastmasters Report 2018
During the third term this year forty-six grade 11 learners in two groups took part in an eight-week course during which they learned important lessons in public speaking and leadership, including management of formal meetings, use of voice and body language, impromptu and prepared speaking and event coordination.
The eighth session involved the final speech competition at which each learner had to present a five-minute speech on their own topic using the skills they learned during the course. The top three learners as voted by their peers were:
1ST place: Belinda Taljaard
2nd place: Jessica Beukes
3rd place: Katy To
1ST place: Megan Bodley
2nd place: Natalie Albutt
3rd place: Alex Verson
Belinda and Megan were invited to compete against the other top speakers in the PE City Schools competition held at Alexander Road High School. Belinda won a creditable third place!
Having finished the course, our young Toastmasters had to plan their graduation ceremonies which were elegant affairs at which they showcased their new skills to family members and teachers. Each person had a part to play and a short speech, toast or thanks to make. Credit must be given to Aiden Hall and Zelschke van Zyl, who took the roles of Toastmaster for their event as well as the committees responsible for the décor and food for creating two enchanting evenings enjoyed by all!
Congratulations to our new Toastmasters who have learned so much. Listen out for them in assemblies next year!
